Sipping coffee and scrolling through my feed reader this morning, I stumbled across a link to A social filesystem on Piccalilli’s The Index. The inner workings of Bluesky, or more accurately, AT protocol, have always been quite opaque to me, but this post laid it out with excellent clarity.
There’s a little more to it (the post is worth a read), but essentially, I understood that AT protocol can be considered as a file based protocol that apps interact with. Much like RSS clients simply read structured text files, Bluesky reads structured text files representing posts, etc.
I’m not sure I could confidently explain ActivityPub either, but somehow, AT feels both more complex and easier to get started with.
In any case, I’m continuing my experiment of bringing this blog into the decentralised web thanks to the Atmosphere plugin for WordPress. It seems to be working better than the ActivityPub plugin (which I can’t figure out how to get to show my profile to other instances), but let’s see how it settles in.
To be honest, this post is mostly an attempt to test how the plugin handles longer posts on Bluesky.
