A More Complete Picture on New Tech and Society

The views in this post are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of any organisation I am associated with.

I’ve had a few interesting conversations in the last couple of weeks that have ended up at the same conclusion: we can talk tech until the cows come home, but the really interesting debates—the debates that are too often absent, especially from the Silicon Valley perspective—are not from the sciences.

The ‘how’ of generative AI, the ‘metaverse’, or self-driving cars will take care of itself.

The ‘why’, ‘what’, and ‘who’ are far more interesting and, in my view, important. What will generative AI mean for higher education? Why do we want an AR or VR metaverse? Who will be most impacted by automation like self-driving cars and trucks?

The science of tech is only one half of a picture that is incomplete without the humanities.

I’m looking forward to seeing where my next conversations on this go!
